I offer editing services for fiction, nonfiction, and academic work. I love getting into the nitty-gritty of writing: not just eliminating errors, but also finding just the right phrase to light up the page, or playing with structure until we find the one that makes your work sing.
Types of Editing Services
Copyediting and Proofreading
Copy editing is the final polish on an otherwise finished manuscript. I will go through with a fine-toothed comb and offer edits to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and other essentials to ensure there are no obstacles in the readability of your writing. This can also include formatting work, where applicable.
Line Editing
Line editing is a process of looking at your work on a sentence level, ensuring your prose sings. Line editing is for you if you’ve done the big picture work already, your manuscript is nearly finished, and you’re ready to zoom in to the details.
I work methodically through your manuscript, offering suggested edits that you can choose to embrace or ignore.
Developmental Editing
Developmental editing is for writers who have already done substantive work towards a manuscript. I will give you feedback and suggestions for the overall structure of the work, whether that may be moving sections/chapters around, adding and developing certain scenes, removing others. We will discuss ways to develop characters, enhance narrative tension, and highlight themes, where applicable.
Manuscript Review
Manuscript reviews are for writers looking for big-picture feedback about where their work stands and what to do next on their journey towards publication.
Coaching
Coaching sessions are about supporting you as a writer in your creative work. What are your goals? What support do you need to get there? We can talk writing process, brainstorm ideas, and tackle strategies to move forward with your work.
How It Works
When you reach out, feel free to let me know where you are at in your process and what type(s) of editing you are looking for. If you’re not sure, that’s okay too!
I will schedule a call with you (video or phone) to discuss your project and my services. I will offer you a quote based on what services you’re requesting, length of the manuscript, and genre. Most projects will fall in the range of $0.02-0.04/word. I require 50% payment before I begin editing work; the remainder is due upon receipt of my completed work. I will give you an estimated timeline along with my quote, so we are on the same page before moving forward.
Hiring an editor for your manuscript is an investment towards creating the best possible version of the story you want to tell. My goal is to help you create a high-quality manuscript that you can send to publishers with confidence.
Why Hire Me, of All the Editors?
It is an honor to be entrusted with a manuscript. You have worked very hard on this, and probably for a very long time. I take it seriously to be given the opportunity to help you shape it as you prepare to send it out in the world. I also find delight in digging in to the text, in whichever editing mode is asked of me, and think through what might be better, and where, and how. I love getting feedback on my writing from others—even when it feels scary—because most times they point out something I hadn’t seen before, making my text richer than I could’ve done on my own. It pleases me to strive to do that for others, too.
I offer sharp thinking alongside compassion. By compassion, I mean the willingness to step into your shoes, as best I can, so that I can keep your voice, style, perspective, and ideas at the fore as I edit. I can also be compassionate in the way I deliver feedback, but never in a way that undercuts honesty. By sharp thinking, I mean thinking both critically and creatively about what I am editing—everything from punctuation choices to character arcs.
I work best with people who bring passion and rigor to their projects. Who are eager to invest (in every way: time, energy, money) in making their book the best it can be and are ready to hear feedback for improvement. If you’ve read this far, I imagine that might be you.
If you’d like to know more about who I am, you can also learn about me here, read my published work, or check out my blog-like substack.
I will not work on projects that promote oppressive ideologies, either in fiction or nonfiction. This includes racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, zionism, classism, ableism, and more.
